When you buy a product from Handmade Havens, you're not buying from a factory. You're buying from a person — a potter in Nizamabad, a weaver in Pochampally, a woodcarver in Warangal, or a coconut shell artisan in Kerala who supplies through our Hyderabad hub.
This article is about them.
Why Telangana Has One of India's Richest Craft Traditions Telangana's craft heritage stretches back thousands of years. The state is home to some of India's most distinctive traditional arts: - Pochampally Ikat: The weaving village of Bhoodan Pochampally gives its name to one of the world's most recognisable resist-dye weaving techniques. Ikat weavers here produce stunning geometric patterns in silk and cotton. - Nirmal Paintings: From Nirmal town in Adilabad district, these lacquered wooden toys and paintings feature scenes from mythology and nature. - Pembarthi Metal Craft: Artisans in Pembarthi, Warangal district, are famous for their sheet metal work — intricate repoussé and embossed pieces. - Nizamabad Black Pottery: Made from a special clay, finished with a charcoal-based technique that gives it a distinctive metallic sheen. - Warangal Dhurries: The flat-woven cotton rugs (dhurries) from Warangal are bold, durable, and made on traditional handlooms.
How Handmade Havens Works with Artisans We don't buy from middlemen. Our sourcing model is direct — we visit artisan clusters, meet the makers, and build long-term relationships: - Direct sourcing: We travel to craft clusters across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala. - Fair pricing: We pay above-market rates to ensure artisans receive a living wage. - No exclusivity pressure: We don't ask artisans to stop working with other buyers. - Transparency: When you buy a product from us, you can ask us who made it and where. We'll tell you.
A Day in the Life: Pochampally Ikat Weaver At 5 AM in Pochampally, the looms start. A single ikat weaver may spend 10–14 hours producing just one metre of fabric. The resist-dyeing process — tying, dyeing, and then weaving — means that a single saree can take 2–3 weeks to complete.
The weavers we work with are typically part of small family units. A husband operates the loom while a wife ties the yarn bundles and assists with the dyeing. Their children often learn the craft from a young age, though many are now choosing education and urban careers — a reality that makes preserving these traditions more urgent.
Supporting Artisans Through Every Purchase Every product you buy from Handmade Havens directly supports an artisan's livelihood. We don't donate a percentage of profits to charity — we simply pay our makers fairly from the start.
